The Key of Return, is a symbol of the right of return. Palestinian refugees took their house keys with them when they were forced to leave their homes during the 1948 Nakba (The Catastrophe). The women of the house would keep their keys safe by putting them around their necks on a small rope or on a necklace so they wouldn’t get lost for when it would be time to go back home. My grandmother told me the story of how her mom kept it for all those years and with it remained hope, then my grandmother kept it and also held on to hope of going back home “soon”. When I asked my mom if she had the key, she said “I wish!” It felt like hope was lost. I just knew I had to create something special that has a strong symbol of hope. This key represents our right to exist, our right of return. It stands for hope and freedom not only for Palestinians, but for everyone. The key to freedom.
